Oakland Lucky Store Converts to New Format
Maxx Value Foods Optimizes Smaller Store Footprint and Focused Selection to
Deliver High Value to Customers

Modesto, Calif. January 9, 2012 – Save Mart Supermarkets will convert the Lucky Store at 4055 MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland to a Maxx Value Foods. The store will remain open during the conversion process which will begin in January.

This will be the second Maxx Value Foods for the company. The pilot store for this new format opened November 2010 in Modesto with a limited selection of dry and fresh products and an aggressive pricing structure. Retaining the look and feel of a conventional grocery store; the limited product selection focuses on the most popular varieties and sizes of items making shopping simpler and more efficient while keeping prices lower. The products offered in this format strive to match the unique ethnic and cultural needs of the community it serves, known as neighborhood marketing.

The limited-assortment format enables the company to develop locations that would otherwise be too small for a conventional- or warehouse-format store. The Modesto store continues to do well and the company anticipates the expansion of this format will generate positive results in volume, sales, and jobs.

“We continuously strive to remain relevant to our customers, and this new store format is an innovative response to the needs of shoppers looking for quality, value, and convenience. The Maxx Value Foods format offers our company an opportunity to remain competitive and protect jobs,” said Steve Junqueiro, President and COO of Save Mart Supermarkets.
