Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

Store Managers Mike Marsh (FoodMaxx-Store 402), Steve Dieterle (FoodMaxx-Store 413)   and Doug Achelpohl (Save Mart-Store 77) all volunteered their time to read to children. Steve and Mike teamed up with Community Action Partnership of Kern to read to Head Start students in Bakersfield. They were also able to donate grocery-related books. Doug, along with Haley Medina, read to Alpha Elementary in Madera.

Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.
